Last year, in 2013, Royal Mail announced that all SMART franking machine users should start making the transition from red ink to blue ink, once their red ink supplies have been used. All brand new machines will now only be supplied with blue ink.
Royal Mail say the reason behind this change is that during testing, blue ink showed improved readability.
Older non-SMART franking machine users can continue using red ink for now, however Royal Mail will be working with all franking machine suppliers in the near future so that everyone is eventually using blue ink to frank their mail.
