This July 30 cyclists made the 370-mile journey from Edinburgh to Mold to raise money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of two outstanding individuals from the local community who tragically lost their lives too soon. This year in memory of brothers Paul and David Hopkins the Hoppo’s Hi 5s bike ride has so far raised a phenomenal £59,331, and TMR are proud to have contributed to the success of such an important and heartfelt campaign.
Mitchell James, one of the founders of the campaign alongside Paul and David’s family, talks of Paul as a kind and instantly infectious personality who didn’t let his congenital heart condition hold him back, living life to his fullest. David was a young man with an appetite for adventure, lived life to the fullest and doing it all with a smile. His friends knew him as a kind and thoughtful individual whose presence was calming.
It is in Paul and David’s memory that Hoppo’s Hi 5s began as a fundraising effort 13 years ago, starting with a modest 5-a-side touch rugby tournament held at their beloved Mold Rugby Club. The fundraising effort has since gone from strength to strength with the now annual tournament gathering players, spectators, family, and friends. In 2021 the fundraising effort went to new heights as the team started a charity bike ride challenge to cycle the 220 miles from Buckingham Palace to Mold Rugby Club. In this first year the team were able to raise an incredible £21,689 for the British Heart Foundation and this set the team’s sights on raising £100,000 by 2027 through three more gruelling bike rides. This year’s completed Edinburgh – Mold route will be followed by rides from the two remaining UK capitals Belfast (in 2025) and Cardiff (in 2027).
This year’s route saw the team ride across four days with a first stop in Carlisle before the gruelling ride through the hills to Morecambe, a final stopover in Widnes, and then on to Mold. Over the four days the eam encountered some challenging weather conditions as well as plenty of mechanical and physical challenges but all valiantly made it to Mold in time to take part in the (presumably weary!) 5-a-side rugby tournament.
The Mailing Room are proud to support Hoppo’s Hi 5s fundraising efforts and congratulate the team, their support crew and everyone that made the ride possible and donated to such a great cause.
