For Christmas last year, a veteran and her son had a home to call their own thanks to weeks of quiet, determined work by one man.

The veteran had spent months facing uncertainty, at risk of being placed in unsuitable accommodation. Working alongside local housing services in Central & West Lancashire, Adam Walmsley pushed her application through and just before Christmas she and her son moved into a stable home of their own. It’s the kind of outcome that could get lost in the numbers of an impact report, but it’s exactly the kind of difference our partnership with Healthier Heroes is designed to make.

The difference at scale

Individual stories like these are part of a much bigger and even more impactful picture. In 2025 alone, Adam supported 109 veterans and their families across Preston and West Lancashire, helped 20 veterans secure comprehensive, specialised housing assistance, and welcomed 2 veterans into safe, supported accommodation at Bancroft House.

Andrew and Rio Powell, owners and co-founders of Bancroft House, spoke of the support of TMR and other partners that makes all this impact possible:

“Without this funding, many veterans and families would be in a far more vulnerable position, facing significant barriers to the support they urgently need. Instead, this investment allows us to stand alongside them at critical moments, offering stability, hope, and a clear pathway toward recovery and independence.”

Taking the conversation further afield

Adam’s impact isn’t limited to direct, one-to-one support. This year he took Healthier Heroes’ message to the next generation, speaking to 60 foundation-level students at the University of Central Lancashire about the realities of veteran mental health, the role of an outreach worker, and where to seek support. The session was well received enough that Adam’s now been invited back, with further dates scheduled at Burnley University in 2026.

It’s exactly the kind of prevention-and-education work that helps a partnership like this go beyond crisis response: reducing stigma, building understanding, and making sure the next generation of professionals and community members know how to support the Armed Forces community around them.
