What Happens If You Use The Old Rates?

Although modern Franking technology is designed to make sure you pay the best rate for your mail, your machine does have to be updated with the latest Royal Mail products, service and rates to ensure you make the most of the franking savings and avoid any surcharges for underpaid mail.

Under the Business Customer Surcharge guidelines, any underpayment on franked mail can produce a charge for the missing postage, along with an administration fee per item. Your franked mail will still be delivered without delay, though via your unique Die number Royal Mail will write to the business re the reason for any charges, or simply collect the underpayment (and reduced fee) directly on newer Mailmark machines. As the new tariffs will differ by a few pence from the current rates, any franked mail using the old rate could incur a charge, so it’s important that your machine is updated for the changeover on 1st January 2021.
